Privacy notice
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Hyggence builds a plant scale and the Skalit companion app. This notice explains what we store, why, who else sees it, and how you can delete it. Watering reminders are decided from pot weight on the scale — not from photos or AI.
1. Who we are
The data controller is:
Hyggence ApS
CVR 46710363
Frydenhøjparken 30
2650 Hvidovre
Denmark
Privacy questions: info@hyggence.com
We are a Danish company. The Skalit app, this website, and our API run on servers at OVHcloud in the United Kingdom.
2. What this notice covers
It applies to:
- the Skalit mobile app
- the Hyggence plant scale and the data it sends over the internet
- this website, including the waiting-list form
- accounts on api.hyggence.com
It does not cover independent websites or apps that we do not operate, such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
3. What we collect
Account
When you create a Skalit account we store your email address, a hashed password, and the time you accepted this notice. We send a short code to that email so we can verify it. We do not ask for your name, phone number, or payment card in the current app.
Home, plants, and the scale
A home can have more than one member. Members of the same home can see the same garden. We store plant names, optional species, care notes, and which scale is linked to which plant. The scale is identified by its Wi-Fi MAC address (uppercase hex, no colons). That identifier is used to attach weight readings to the right pot. We do not use it for advertising.
Photos
If you take or choose a photo — at set-up, in the journal, or for a leaf check — we store it with that plant. We keep few photos (at most ten per plant). You can delete a photo in the app. The home admin can delete a plant, which removes its photos for everyone in that home.
Weight history and watering inbox
The scale sends weight readings, and related device fields such as chip temperature and uptime, to our servers. We keep a history so the app can show the curve and so the system can learn a wet and dry weight. “Water needed” and “Watered” events are stored on the server. Whether you have opened a message is stored only on that phone.
On the phone only
Bluetooth set-up talks to the scale next to you. Wi-Fi name and password you type during pairing go to the scale, not to Hyggence. Tapping the pot wakes the scale locally so it can retry an upload. That is not a phone notification, and we do not receive a live location from it.
Website waiting list
If you join the waiting list on this site, we receive the name and email address you type into the form. That list is separate from a Skalit account.
Technical logs
Our servers and the website may keep short-lived logs (for example IP address, time, and which request failed) so we can run the service and look into faults. We do not use these logs to build advertising profiles.
We do not sell your data. We do not show third-party adverts in Skalit. We do not use the app as a live push-notification client.
4. Why we use it
Under the EU and UK GDPR, we rely on these legal bases:
- Contract. Creating an account, pairing a scale, storing weight history, and showing the watering inbox so the product you signed up for actually works.
- Consent. Optional photos; sending a set-up photo to Pl@ntNet to suggest a species; sending a leaf photo and a short plant summary to Google Gemini for a leaf check; joining the website waiting list; loading optional photos and display fonts on this website. You can refuse these and still use the scale and watering inbox, and you can still read this website.
- Legitimate interests. Keeping the service secure, diagnosing faults, and improving reliability — balanced against your right to a quiet, private home product.
- Legal obligation. Keeping records we must keep under Danish or EU law, including accounting if you later buy hardware from us.
Pl@ntNet is not used to decide when to water. A leaf check may describe what the photo shows and add a caution. It cannot start or stop a watering reminder. It is not a laboratory diagnosis.
5. Who we share it with
We use processors who only handle data on our instructions:
- OVHcloud (United Kingdom). Hosts the website, API, database, and object storage for photos and history.
- Pl@ntNet (European Union). If you ask the app to identify a plant, we send that photo so Pl@ntNet can suggest a scientific name. You confirm the match. The API key stays on our servers.
- Google (Gemini), United States. If you ask for a leaf check, we send the photo plus a 14-day weight summary, chip temperature, and the plant profile. That transfer is covered by Google’s data-processing terms and Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
- MailPoet. Sends waiting-list email from this WordPress site.
- Email delivery. Sends the Skalit sign-up verification code to the address you gave us.
People in your home who you add as members can see that home’s plants, photos, and watering history. We do not share your garden with other customers.
We may disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect the company or our users in a genuine dispute. We will not hand a marketing list to anyone.
6. Transfers outside the EEA and UK
Account data, plants, photos, and weight history are stored in the United Kingdom. The UK currently has an EU adequacy decision, so that storage is treated as a permitted transfer from the EEA.
Leaf checks go to Google in the United States, using SCCs. Photos sent to Pl@ntNet stay with an EU service. A photo sent for a single identify or leaf-check request cannot later be pulled back from that model or API. Deleting the copy we keep does not erase what those services may already have processed for that request.
If you allow optional content on this website, your browser also requests photos from Unsplash and font files from Google, both in the United States. Those requests include your IP address. They do not include your name or email. MailPoet may request font files from Google in order to display the waiting-list form.
7. How long we keep it
- Account and garden. Until you delete the account or the home admin deletes the plant.
- Photos. Until you delete them, or we delete them with the plant, and in any case we cap storage at ten photos per plant.
- Weight history and watering events. For as long as the plant remains in the home, so the curve and reminders still make sense.
- Backups. After you delete a plant or account, backups are kept for a short time (about 30 days) and then expire. We do not offer a 14-day cooling-off restore of a deleted garden.
- Waiting list. Until you ask us to remove the address, or we close that list.
- Logs. Only as long as we need them to run and secure the service.
If you are a home member (not the admin) and you delete your account, you leave that home. The garden stays for the people who remain. If you are the home admin, deleting your account also removes the home: plants, photos, watering history, and leaf checks. Other members keep their own logins, but they lose this garden.
8. Your rights
If the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to you, you can ask us to:
- access a copy of the personal data we hold
- correct it
- delete it
- restrict or object to certain processing
- receive data you provided in a common machine-readable format
- withdraw consent for optional features (photos, Pl@ntNet, Gemini, waiting list, and optional photos and fonts on this website) without affecting the watering inbox
In Skalit you can sign out, delete a photo, delete a plant (home admin), or delete your account from Settings. For a copy of your data, or if the in-app tools are not enough, email info@hyggence.com.
You can complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency, Datatilsynet (datatilsynet.dk). If you live in another EEA country you may also contact your local authority. In the UK, that is the ICO.
If you are in California, we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context advertising as those terms are used in US state privacy law.
9. Permissions on your phone
- Internet. To reach our API.
- Camera and photos. Only if you take or choose a plant picture. You can skip photos and still water from the scale.
- Bluetooth. To pair the scale with your home Wi-Fi.
- Location (Android). Older Android versions require a location permission before an app can scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. We use that permission for set-up scanning. We do not collect, store, or share your location, and we do not use it for maps or advertising.
10. This website and cookies
hyggence.com is a WordPress site hosted by OVHcloud in the United Kingdom. We do not run advertising cookies, and we do not use a third-party analytics tag. We do not sell or share personal data for advertising.
The first time you open the site, a banner lets you keep essential cookies only, or also allow optional content. The two choices are the same size, on the same screen. You can change your mind later with Cookie settings in the footer. We store the choice in a first-party cookie, hg_cookie_consent, for six months. That cookie is how we remember what you asked for, so it is set when you choose, including when you refuse optional content. We do not set it before you choose. The banner needs JavaScript. If JavaScript is off, optional photos and fonts stay off.
Strictly necessary
- Your cookie choice. hg_cookie_consent on hyggence.com. Six months. First party.
- The site and the waiting-list form. WordPress and MailPoet may set a cookie so the form can be submitted and the site can stay secure. These are not used for advertising. If you block every cookie in the browser, the page will still read, but the form may not submit.
Optional content
Off until you allow it. If you allow it, pages that include them will load:
- Photos from Unsplash (United States). Your IP address is sent to Unsplash with the image request.
- Display fonts from Google (Fraunces and Outfit, United States). Your IP address is sent to Google with the font request. We do not send your name or email with it.
If you turn optional content off later, that applies the next time you open the page. Files already downloaded during this visit stay in the browser until then.
MailPoet, which shows the waiting-list form, may also request font files from Google when the form is on the page, including before you answer the banner. We use that only to display the form. We do not use it for advertising.
11. Children
Skalit is made for adults looking after houseplants. It is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly create accounts for them. If you believe a child has given us data, write to info@hyggence.com and we will delete it.
12. Changes
If we change this notice in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top of this page. For a material change to how Skalit uses account data, we will also tell signed-in users in the app or by email.
